22/12/98 Analysis of the Parkinson's Internet community

I wanted to do some analysis to work out how many people would benefit from Parkinson's Information on the Internet, especially now we've got a number of PD lists in different languages.

I started writing this up as a post to the PARKINSN list, but it got too long and detailed for a post. So I posted a summary to the list, and here's the original detailed post:

Subject: Parkinson's in different languages: Statistics

Hi,

You may be aware that there are now Parkinson's Disease mailing lists in:
       - English (PARKINSN, CARE, PDNEWS, PDUK)
       - French (PARKLISTE)
       - Dutch (NEDERPARK)
       - German (DEUPARK)
       - Spanish (Parkinson Universal)

(If I've missed any please let me know!)

It occured to me that our Parkinson's Community has now grown to cover a
pretty respectable proportion of the world population.

Using some statistics from http://www.euromktg.com/globstats/, I have done
a bit of analysis to work out big the Parkinson's community may be.

People with             %age of         Total people in
Internet access         world online    world who speak
               (Millions)              population      this lang. (Millions)
English           91                       60%                  470
French             6                        4%                   72
German          13.7                        9%                   98
Dutch            4.1                        3%                   20
Spanish         14.2                        9%                  266
               ====                      ====                 ====
Total            129                       85%                  926

(don't forget the totals aren't accurate because people can speak more than
one language)

So at the moment, approximately 85% of the world's online population could
find a Parkinson's mailing list in a language they speak.

Given an incidence of Parkinson's of 1 in 500 people, I wanted to find out
how large the audience for PD information would be.I looked both at PWP's
and also given for a particular PWP there might be 3 other people who would
be motivated to learn about Parkinson's. I calculated these figures by
dividing the number of people with Internet access by 500, to get the
number of PWPs, multiplied this by 4 to find the number of PWPs and close
circle.

Internet access                PWP             PWP & Close circle
          (Millions)              (Thousands)             (Thousands)
English        91                     182                      728
French          6                      12                       48
German         13.7                    27.4                    109.6
Dutch           4.1                     8.2                     32.8
Spanish        14.2                    28.4                    113.6
             =====                   =====                   ======
Total         129                     258                     1032

Based on these figures, the PARKINSN list with 1,600 members serves 0.2% of
the total English speaking Internet PD community.

There are a number of factors that should be taken into account to make
this analysis more reliable - if anyone has any thoughts please let me know:
       - Generally the Internet population has more young people. However,
a larger number of retirees are coming on line, PWPs may have an
incentive to get on line, and the "PWP & Close Circle" number will
         still hold true.
       - The "Internet access" numbers will jump when people get computers
for Christmas. Also, there's no account for the people who use
occasional Internet access like cafes or libraries.

For the curious, the lists are:

       - English
               - PARKINSN
               - CARE
               - PDNEWS
               - PDUK
       - French
               - PARKLISTE
       - Dutch
               - NEDERPARK
       - German
               - DEUPARK
       - Spanish
               - Parkinson Universal (contact Ana Mari del Arco <parkinson@sarenet.es>)

I realised this analysis could be improved - I just the Statistics I could find, I haven't modelled age distributions, or used a reliable incidence for PD. But its a first try..... if you have any comments please let me know.
