About the domain parkinsons.org.uk
I applied for the Internet domain domain parkinsons.org.uk in 1996. This is a high profile domain name and I wanted to secure it for the Parkinson's community rather than have it snapped up by a commercial organisation (lots of other Parkinson's related domains have gone already). At the time I wrote to the PDS letting them know I had the domain on behalf of the wider community, and maintained a page on this site with information abou the domain.
In early 2000, the PDS of the UK got their own Internet connection and I offered to transfer the domain to them subject to the conditions I mentioned in my letters on this issue (basically, that other users of the domain can continue as they are - this has no effect on the PDS).
The PDS don't have the infrastructure or expertise to manage the domain, so its hosted on NIP's servers (for free). Note this is different from email and web services, these are managed by the PDS.
For the curious, here's the things that need to be preserved for the services I run...
To maintain my services, I need:
- Various MX records for lyris.parkinsons.org.uk. These are for the email lists I run.
- A record for lyris.parkinsons.org.uk. This is to handle mail systems that don't respect MX records.
- CNAME for lists.parkinsons.org.uk. This is the web interface to Lyris, the list server.
- CNAME record for james.parkinsons.org.uk. This is my main web site.
To keep the SPRING site & email working:
- Various MX records for spring.parkinsons.org.uk, which send their mail off to NIP's server which re-writes their mail.
- A CNAME for spring.parkinsons.org.uk, this is their web site.
- A CNAME for www.spring.parkinsons.org.uk, this is their web site (some people want to put www in front of everything).
